Industrial Manufacturing Company

The Challenge

An industrial manufacturing organisation wanted to bring its operational workforce and leadership team together to explore what everyone needed to do differently to achieve the company's objectives over the next 12 months.

The goal was not simply to communicate the strategy. The organisation wanted people at every level to contribute to shaping the future, creating a shared sense of responsibility and ownership across the business.

This presented a unique challenge.

The audience included a mix of operational leaders and frontline employees, many of whom spent their days working on the factory floor. Some arrived at the workshop in hard hats, high-visibility clothing and steel-toe-capped boots, questioning why they had been taken away from important operational work to attend what appeared to be a session involving LEGO bricks.

At first glance, enthusiasm was limited.

The BRICX Approach

Working closely with the leadership team, we designed an inclusive LEGO® Serious Play® workshop that would enable every participant, regardless of role or seniority, to contribute equally.

A key factor in the success of the day was the commitment shown by the organisational leader. He was determined that everyone should have a voice in shaping the business's future and had deliberately created the time and space for people to step away from operational demands and engage fully in the conversation.

The workshop began with a series of skills-building activities, helping participants become comfortable with the concepts of metaphor, storytelling and Serious Play.

As people gained confidence, something remarkable happened.

The Breakthrough

The room transformed.

What had initially been a group of reluctant participants quickly became an engaged, energetic and highly creative team.

During one of the early liberation exercises, designed to introduce storytelling through LEGO models, one table created a continuous evolving story using their builds. Participants became deeply invested in the narrative, building on each other's ideas and creating connections that would have been difficult to achieve through traditional discussion alone.

The exercise demonstrated the power of metaphor to unlock thinking, encourage participation and create genuine engagement.

From that point onwards, the energy in the room accelerated.

Participants who had initially appeared disengaged became some of the most active contributors, using their models to share insights, ideas and experiences that might otherwise never have surfaced.

  • “LEGO® Serious Play® workshop models created by participants to explore ideas, challenges and different perspectives.”
    Blue LEGO model
  • “Shared LEGO® Serious Play® model representing participant ideas, experiences and solutions during a BRICX workshop.”
    Larger collaborative model
  • “Detailed LEGO® Serious Play® model using metaphor and storytelling to communicate ideas during a BRICX workshop.”

  • “Participants collaborating and building LEGO® Serious Play® models during an interactive BRICX team development workshop.”

The Outcome

As the workshop progressed into the main builds, the depth of thinking became increasingly evident.

Individuals and teams created rich, meaningful models that explored:

  • The challenges facing the organisation

  • Opportunities for improvement

  • Barriers to achieving objectives

  • New ideas and innovations

  • Personal and collective responsibilities for success

What made the session particularly powerful was the quality of the problem-solving taking place in real time.

Through the models and conversations they generated, participants were not only identifying issues but also working together to find practical solutions.

The workshop produced a range of actionable ideas and commitments designed to support the company's objectives over the next year.

The Impact

The feedback from participants was exceptional.

Many described the session as the best development experience they had ever attended.

Ironically, as several people reflected afterwards, it had not felt like traditional training at all. Rather than being told what to think or do, participants had generated the insights, solutions and actions themselves.

The workshop created:

  • Stronger engagement across operational and leadership teams

  • Greater inclusion and participation

  • Increased ownership of business objectives

  • Practical ideas for future improvement

  • Enhanced collaboration and problem-solving

  • A stronger sense of shared purpose

For the organisation's leader, the session delivered even more than alignment around annual objectives.

By hearing perspectives from across the workforce and seeing the creativity that emerged when people were given the opportunity to contribute, he left feeling genuinely excited, not only about achieving the year's goals but also about what might be possible beyond them.
